Joe Friday of the LAPD, voluntarily decided to discontinue the series that year in favor of focusing on the Dragnet spinoff series Adam-12.

Such was the popularity of Dragent – and the iconic Joe Friday – that series was scheduled for a comeback in 1982.  But plans for the revival were canceled when Webb died unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 63.  Never actually a policeman, Webb’s commitment to realism in Dragnet, his years of unwavering support of the LAPD, and the unfailing positive light he portrayed law enforcement in general were lauded upon Webb’s death.  Given full police honors at his funeral, LA lowered its flags to half-staff and Webb himself was interred with a replica LAPD badge bearing the rank of Sergeant and numbered 714. That badge number was thereupon retired forever by the LAPD.

This pin replica of Sgt. Joe Friday’s badge was released by T M Sherry. It measures approximately 1.5 by 2 inches, is in fair condition and will be shipped with the utmost care.
